Discipleship

Please read and meditate on the following information.  This topic is very important.  All passages from this document have been taken from the New International Version Bible.

Acts 11:26

26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

A)  No distinction between disciples and Christian. B)  The same level of commitment is expected from all.

John 8:31-32

The Children of Abraham  31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

A) Merely believing is not enough to be a disciple. B) One must obey (abide in, hold to) the teachings of Jesus.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John 13:34-35

34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

A) Christians are known by their love for one another. B) We must love as Jesus loved. This type of love demands time, effort and thought.

Matthew 28:18-20 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

A) All disciples are to go and make disciples. B) We need to teach them the teachings of Jesus. C) All disciples need to be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and
    the Holy Spirit.

Mark 1:17 17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."

A) We need to go and catch people for Jesus. B) Disciples are to make disciples.

Luke 14:25-33

The Cost of Being a Disciple
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.  28 "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? 29 For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, 30 saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'  31 "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

A) A disciple must not love anyone, others or himself, or anything above Jesus. B) He must count the cost of whether he can be a disciple and count the cost of not
     following God.

Luke 9:23-26
23 Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? 26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

A) A disciple can not be ashamed of Jesus and his teachings. B) If you are ashamed of Jesus, he will be ashamed of you on the Day of Judgment.

Luke 9:57-62

The Cost of Following Jesus
57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."  58 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."  59 He said to another man, "Follow me."       But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."  60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."  61 Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family."  62 Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

   A)  You are not fit to be a disciple, if you are making excuses on why you cannot
         follow Jesus.
   B)  You need to become a disciple of Jesus Christ as soon as possible.   C)  The time is NOW for you to become a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Questions to ask yourself

1)  Are you a Disciple according to theses Scriptures?
2)  Who are you affecting for Christ?

GOD’S COMPLETE PLAN OF SALVATION:

1)  Hear the Word: Romans 10:17 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

2)  Believe the Gospel:  Acts 8: 37                                                                                37 Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." The eunuch answered, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."

3)  Repent of your Sins: Luke 13: 3 - 5 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."

4) Confess Christ as Lord:  Romans 10: 9 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved

5) Be Baptized (Immersed In Water):  Acts 2: 38  38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 22:16 16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.'

ENOCH 94: 1 - 4

1. And now I say to you, my children, love righteousness and walk in it;
For the paths of righteousness are worthy of acceptance, But the paths of unrighteousness will quickly be destroyed and vanish.

2. And to certain men of a generation shall the paths of violence and of death be revealed, And they shall hold themselves afar from them, And shall not follow them.

3. And now I say to you, the righteous: do not walk in the wicked path, or in wrong doing, or in the paths of death, and do not draw near to them, or you may be destroyed.

4. But seek and choose for yourselves, righteousness, and a life that is pleasing and walk in the paths of peace so that you may live and prosper.
